Istanbul traffic is heavy, and the city sits on two continents. On a motorcycle you will spend most of your planning on one question: how to get across the Bosphorus. This guide covers the crossings and what they cost in 2026, then traffic, lane rules, parking, weather and the ways out of the city.
Crossing between Europe and Asia
You have three kinds of crossing: the bridges, the Eurasia Tunnel and the car ferry. Bridges and motorways are tolled through the HGS electronic tag, and the tunnel has no cash or card booths. Sort out payment before you ride. Our guide to tolls and HGS for motorcycles explains how.
Motorcycles pay the class 6 rate on roads and bridges run by the highways authority KGM. These were the motorcycle tolls in 2026:
| Crossing | Motorcycle toll | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Temmuz Şehitler Bridge | 25 TL | Charged in both directions |
| Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Bridge | 25 TL | Charged in both directions |
| Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge | 75 TL | From 1 July 2026, both directions |
| Eurasia Tunnel, 05:00–23:59 | 257.40 TL | From 1 July 2026 |
| Eurasia Tunnel, 00:00–04:59 | 128.70 TL | Night rate, half price |
| İDO car ferry, Sirkeci–Harem | 100 TL | Rider included, September 2026 fare |
The bridges
The 15 Temmuz Şehitler Bridge is the old Bosphorus Bridge in the middle of the city. The FSM Bridge further north carries the TEM motorway. The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, near the Black Sea, carries the Northern Ring Motorway. It is open to every vehicle class, so it is the safe choice if you are bypassing the city.
Which vehicles may use the two inner bridges is set by the city transport board, UKOME, and it changes from time to time. Vehicles crossing without permission pay a penalty on top of the toll. Follow the signs on the approach roads.
Wind is the bigger risk. The bridges are high and exposed. In strong southwesterly lodos wind, the 15 Temmuz Bridge has been closed to motorcycles, and riders have waited for hours at the entrance. In November 2021 the Istanbul Governor banned motorcycle riding across the city during a lodos storm. Riders who ignored it were fined and their bikes were impounded. Check the forecast and local news before a windy crossing.
The Eurasia Tunnel
The Eurasia Tunnel runs under the Bosphorus. It has been open to motorcycles since 1 May 2022. Only vehicles that meet the legal definition of a motorcycle may enter. Mopeds, electric scooters and bicycles are banned.
The tunnel is out of the wind and rain, which makes it the best crossing in bad weather. It is also the most expensive. There are no toll booths. You pay through an HGS tag, the tunnel's website or its app, and foreign-plated vehicles can use the website or app. You have 15 days to pay without penalty. Between 15 and 45 days the penalty is one extra toll, and after that it is four times the toll.
The car ferry
The İDO car ferry between Sirkeci (European side, near the old city) and Harem (Asian side, near Üsküdar) carries motorcycles. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. In September 2026 the motorcycle fare was 100 TL including the rider. It avoids both the bridges and the wind. Check the current timetable with İDO before you go.
Traffic and rush hours
TomTom measured average congestion in Istanbul at 62% in 2025. The evening rush is much worse than the morning one, and congestion peaks around 6pm on weekdays. The bridges are the worst bottlenecks. The TEM motorway, the D-100 and the Anatolian Motorway also jam at peak times.
Plan crossings outside the evening rush where you can.
Ride defensively. Expect sudden lane changes and many delivery riders. Stay out of bus lanes and tram corridors, including the Metrobüs lanes, unless signs allow motorcycles.
Lane splitting and other rules
Lane splitting is not legal in Türkiye. A motorcycle must use a full lane like any other vehicle. Filtering between cars is a traffic offence. In a crash with a car changing lanes, the rider can be held at fault. Riding in the emergency lane is a serious offence too.
Other rules that apply in the city, with fines from 2026:
- Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, worn properly. The fine is 2,500 TL, rising to 5,000 TL for a second offence within a year.
- Riding on the pavement costs 5,000 TL.
- Wheelies and stunts cost 46,000 TL, with a 60-day licence suspension.
- Mopeds (50cc) may not use motorways, the Eurasia Tunnel or the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
Paying a fine within 15 days gets a one-quarter discount. For speed limits, see our speed limits guide.
Parking
A September 2025 circular from the Istanbul Governorship bans motorcycle parking on pavements, footpaths and squares. Motorcycles also may not enter areas closed to traffic. Police and municipal officers enforce this, and towing is common in central districts.
Park in marked motorcycle bays, which are often found near squares and ferry piers, or in a staffed car park. At night choose a visible, well-lit spot and use a lock for short stops.
Weather and road surfaces
Rain makes Istanbul's streets slippery fast. Cobblestones and painted road markings get slick when wet. Tram rails are the worst hazard: cross them as close to a right angle as you can, never at a shallow angle. Showers and sea winds arrive quickly, so carry rain gear and spare gloves even in summer.
Getting out of the city
Heading west to Thrace, Edirne and the border, the D-100 jams through the western suburbs between Zeytinburnu and Avcılar. The Northern Marmara Motorway avoids it. In 2026 a motorcycle paid 195 TL from Kınalı to Fatih on its European section. For border crossings, see our guides for Greece and Bulgaria.
Heading into Anatolia, cross to the Asian side and take the motorway east. The Osmangazi Bridge over the Gulf of İzmit is the fast way south towards Bursa and İzmir. It cost a motorcycle 820 TL from 1 July 2026. For the road to central Anatolia, see Istanbul to Cappadocia.
Leave early in the morning to beat the traffic. Fill up before you start: see fuel in Türkiye. If you are renting, bring a licence with the right motorcycle category; our licence and IDP guide explains what you need.
