Crossing from Bulgaria into Türkiye by motorcycle

Updated: 2 November 2026

Three road crossings link Bulgaria and Türkiye. Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule, at the end of the Bulgarian motorway, is the main one and among the busiest land crossings in Europe. The two smaller crossings, Lesovo–Hamzabeyli and Malko Tarnovo–Dereköy, also take motorcycles and can save you hours on a busy day.

The three crossings

Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule

This is the crossing most riders use. On the Bulgarian side the Maritsa motorway (A4, part of the E80) runs 117 km from the Trakia motorway near Chirpan, past Haskovo and Svilengrad, straight to the border. On the Turkish side it continues as the D100. Edirne is 23 km from the gate.

The price of that convenience is traffic. Kapıkule and Kapitan Andreevo handle about 2.4 million vehicles and 4 million people a year. In summer, many Turks living in Western Europe drive home this way, and the crossing runs at full capacity. Between late June and early September 2025, more than 600,000 vehicles crossed. Bulgaria's consul general in Edirne advised avoiding Fridays and weekends and carrying food and water. Truck queues can also stretch for kilometres back along the motorway.

On a motorcycle you still have to wait in the line. Plan for it: cross on a weekday, early in the morning, with water and a full tank.

Lesovo–Hamzabeyli

Hamzabeyli, in the Lalapaşa district of Edirne province, was built mainly for commercial traffic, but cars and motorcycles may use it too. It has four entry and four exit lanes for cars, separate from the truck lanes. When Kapıkule is jammed with holiday traffic, it is the first alternative to check. Expect trucks on the approach roads.

Malko Tarnovo–Dereköy

This crossing sits between the province of Burgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and Kırklareli in Türkiye. It makes sense if you are riding down the Bulgarian coast rather than taking the motorway via Svilengrad. In August 2026 it was opened to light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes to take some pressure off Kapıkule and Hamzabeyli, so it may be busier than before.

No vignette for motorcycles in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's e-vignette is required only for vehicles with at least four wheels. Motorcycles do not need one, so you can ride the Maritsa motorway to the border without buying anything.

Leaving Bulgaria

Bulgaria joined the Schengen area for land borders on 1 January 2025, and checks at its borders with Greece and Romania were lifted. The border with Türkiye is different: it is an external border of the Schengen area, so you go through Bulgarian exit control before you reach the Turkish side.

Entering Türkiye

At the Turkish booths you show:

  • Your passport, and a visa or e-Visa if your nationality needs one (see our visa guide). Make sure the officer stamps and dates it.
  • Your driving licence (see our licence guide).
  • The bike's registration document, or a power of attorney if the bike is registered to someone else.
  • Insurance valid in Türkiye. If you have no valid policy, one can be issued at the customs office. See our insurance guide.

Customs registers the bike to you with an end date. Without a residence permit you may keep it in Türkiye for up to 90 days in any 180, and only close family may ride it, and only while you are in the country. The details are in our checklist for riding into Türkiye.

Onward to Istanbul

From Kapıkule you have two choices. The O-3 toll motorway starts at Edirne and runs about 230 to 245 km to Istanbul. The D100, the older main road, runs 253 km from Kapıkule to Istanbul via Lüleburgaz and Çorlu. If you are going on to central Türkiye, see our Istanbul to Cappadocia route.

  • Water, food and a full tank for the queue
  • Passport, visa if needed, licence, registration document
  • Green Card covering Türkiye, or money to buy a policy at customs
